The Valley
Belonging to the municipality of Alcaucin, the Valley where the hotel is located is formed by the West slopes of Sierra Tejeda, 350 metres above sea level and crossed by the rivers Salia and Alcaucín. The mountain Maroma (2.080 m) dominates the entire Valley.
Born in the heart of Sierra Tejeda, the river Alcaucín receives water from several streams. The municipality is rich in mineral and medicinal waters.
Access to the North of the Valley is achieved from the province of Granada, via Ventas de Zafarraya through one of the most spectacular hills of the penibética, known as the "Boquete de Zafarraya" and which has an amazing view of much of the region of the Axarquía with the municipality of Alcaucín below and the Mediterranean in the background.
Alcaucin (a natural paradise)
Its name, of Arabic origin, is derived from the word Al Cautin (arch). The rich lands of the village extend to the North of the Axarquia. Immediately on entering, we have before us an example of a Moorish village, with whitewashed façades, low houses and winding narrow streets. Highlights include the Town Hall, the church building and several notable houses, as well as its famous fountain of the five streams. Numerous festivals and hospitable people make Alcaucin a village worth knowing.
The Sierra del Alcázar
About 4 kms from the hotel and almost in the heart of Sierra Tejeda is the natural park of Sierra del Alcázar, established as a camping area by the AMA, which has provided it with all kinds of services. The surrounding landscape is of enormous beauty. It is dominated by the stream Alcazar, who was born in the central massif of Sierra Tejeda, and has permanent water, with banks covered in rich vegetation. On the summits one may see birds of prey and ibex. A walk here will be a wise decision.
The Castle of Salia and the Medieval village
Close to the hotel are the ruins of the fortress of Salia and the plateau of the Mesa de Salia, a place where there was once a very old settlement. The castle may have been originally built by the Phoenicians to support their penetration in the territory. The ruins we see today were built by the Moors, who garrisoned the Castle, remaining in it for some 500 years until the conquest of Vélez in 1487.
But the history of Alcaucin has other antecedents. Evidence has been found that prehistoric man inhabited this area. A mandible of a Neanderthal man, as well as a femur and other remains, were found in 1983 in a cave near the Zafarraya gap.
The Axarquia, located in the eastern part of the province is a territory with an enormous potential of resources of great interest to tourists. Diversity and physical closeness between its villages are a reference point where the visitor can find large natural spaces with sierras, mountains, slopes, cliffs and beaches, so as well as enjoy a native cuisine or a magnificent artistic heritage. In a place of light and colour, its picturesque villages have managed to keep the beauty of their streets and squares, monuments and popular celebrations.
The climate of the Axarquía - Costa del Sol is basically Mediterranean with mild winters and warm summers.
The traditional crafts of the Axarquía originated in rural communities who settled in the Muslim period in the province of Malaga. It is not difficult to find craftsmen in the interior still working with wood, esparto grass, wrought iron or clay.
The exceptional situation of the region with its light has inspired a generation of painters who in some cases have achieved international fame.
There are five routes declared of Tourist interest in Andalusia, which will help us to experience the richness of this region and its municipalities.
Mudejar route
In the interior of the Axarquía, between the slopes of the Sierra de Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara, are a series of white villages, which still retain their Muslim heritage. These villages, indifferent to time, are perhaps the most intimate and authentic in the region.
Route of Sun and avocado
Visit part of the coastline of the coast of the Axarquia, which has a natural environment of great richness and variety. Due to its climate and its situation one can find abundant crops of avocados and tropical mango, papaya and custard apple.
The Sun and wine route
This route combines the best of the coast and inland, combining tourist frenzy and rural peace. This proximity to the beach marks the qualities of the route of Sun and wine, forming a duality that manifests itself in all its cultural aspects.
Route of oil and mountains
This route runs through the mountain ranges of Alhama, Tejeda, Enmedio and Jobo, offering a unique landscape of mountains, dominated by the green of the olive trees and grasses. It comprises those villages whose main production is the oil of the "verdial" variety, one of the best in the world, with a special and different taste. Dramatic changes of scenery, a lake surrounded by mountains, and beautiful mountain villages hanging over the Mediterranean.
Route of raisins
The landscape of this route, located in the heart of the Axarquía is dominated by fields of vineyards and drying raisins. The climatic and geographic conditions in the area are ideal for the cultivation of the Malaga raisin, and production of the famous sweet “Moscatel” wine.
Our villages
Axarquia maintains its name as a legacy of its Arabic history
In just a few kilometres you can find such a variety of landscapes, climates and situations that it almost seems you have travelled through several different countries. Its physical and human variety has been enriched by a generous history, that has not only left magnificent cultural traces, but that has also produced a humanized landscape that further enhances the natural scenery.
For all these reasons the Axarquia is one of the regions in Andalusia with the most identity and tradition. Both the coast and the interior have produced a succession of towns with a truly Andalusian flavour which breathes the nostalgia of a magnificent past.
Along its coastline, there are important tourist resorts such as Rincon de la Victoria, Almayate or Torre del Mar, and Vélez-Málaga, capital of the Axarquía. Towards the East are Algarrobo, Torrox and finally, Nerja, located on a coastal plain overlooking the cliff as if it were a balcony.
Together with these coastal municipalities, you can find, spread across the interior, an endless succession of Mediterranean and Moorish villages, with their whitewashed white houses, red roofs, walls covered in pots, and narrow and winding streets.
An open, generous and hospitable people.
